WBB: Highlanders Fall to Gators on the Road

BALTIMORE, MD – The Cairn University Women's Basketball team faced the Notre Dame of Maryland Gators on the road Monday night, dropping their Skye Division matchup 72-57, putting an end to their four-game win streak.

NOTABLES:
  • Junior forward Taylor Hinson (Carney's Point, NJ / Collingswood) led the Highlanders in scoring as she dropped 20 points on better than 50% shooting from the floor and a perfect 6-6 from the free throw line, providing four assists.
  • Freshman guard Makayla Raines (Jonesboro, GA / St. Mary's Academy) was also in double digits, adding 19 points with a pair of threes.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Gators won the tip off, scoring immediately and getting ahead 5-0 in the first minute of play.
  • Hinson scored the first ten points for the Highlanders, keeping Cairn within arm's reach as Notre Dame got ahead 16-10.
  • Raines knocked down a three with freshman guard T'miya Bryant (Raleigh, NC / South Garner High School) cutting the lead to a single point with Cairn trailing only 19-17 after the first quarter.
  • Freshman forward Amalia Vamvakitis (Waterford, MI / Mount Dora Christian Academy) tied things up on a layup. After Hinson would tie the score again on a pair of free throw, Notre Dame scored 5 in a row, stopped by another Raines triple. The Gators took a 34-26 lead into halftime.
  • In the third, the Gators opened on a 16-4 run to get their lead up to twenty. It would be an uphill battle for the Highlanders who were able to take a five point bite out of the lead by the end of the frame (54-39).
  • Notre Dame would start the fourth quarter in similar fashion as the third, outscoring the Highlanders 14-4 through the first five minutes. Cairn answered back with a 14-4 run of their own with both teams scoring 18 points in the quarter as time ran out on the Cairn comeback.

UPCOMING SCHEDULE:
  • Cairn hosts Keystone for a Women's/Men's doubleheader on Wednesday night at 5 p.m. in Langhorne.
  • The Highlanders will face off against the Phoenix on Saturday at 3 p.m. in Chambersburg, PA before hosting Saint Elizabeth and Bryn Athyn to close out conference play next Monday and Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
