BB: Baseball Drops Season Opener at Cabrini, 13-3

RADNOR, PA – The Cairn University Baseball team opened up their season on Friday against Cabrini, coming out with a 13-3 defeat on a cold February afternoon.

Cabrini (2-0) got things started in the second inning, putting up a five-spot as a result of a throwing error to put the Highlanders behind early. The Cavaliers added a home run in the third to go up 6-0. Sophomore catcher Zach Bauers (Cooper City, FL / Cooper City) picked up his first hit of the young season, singling to right center followed by a single from junior first baseman Tyler Warr (Langhorne, PA / Neshaminy) who set up 5th year utility man Sam Spadea (Yardley, PA / Pennsbury) to drive Bauers in on a double and get Cairn (0-1) on the board. Warr would come around to score as well to make the game a more manageable 6-2.

The Cavaliers added five more in response during the fifth inning, capping off their offensive day with a 2 RBI double in the sixth to put the game out of reach, 13-2. Freshman centerfielder Zachary Johnson (Hawaii Kai, HI / TCS Post Grad Academy) recorded his first collegiate hit in the top of the 7th, driving a solo home run over the fence.

Senior right-hander Eli Schooley (Horseheads, NY / Horseheads High School) took the loss, going 1.2 innings allowing six hits and five runs while fanning three hitters. Fifth year right handed pitcher Harrison Green (Jackson, MS / Park Place Christian Academy) pitched a scoreless two thirds of an innings in relief, striking out one.

The Highlanders look to regroup as they prepare to face the Profs of Rowan University in a week in Glassboro, NJ for a 3 p.m. first pitch.
