BALTIMORE, MD – The Cairn Highlanders Women's Basketball was on the road on Saturday, heading to Notre Dame of Maryland.
The matchup started with four jump shots, in which junior guard
Tatiana Ipri (Mullica Hill, NJ / Gloucester County Christian) was the first to succeed with a layup, free throw, and a drilled three-pointer, putting Cairn (1-8 / 0-3 UNITED EAST) on the scoreboard. Senior guard
Kailee Sobrino (Vail, AZ Empire) and sophomore guard
Emily Brittin (Winslow, NJ / Pilgrim Academy) had one layup aiece in Highlander's last points of the first quarter (10-17).
Ipri and Sobrino landed back-to-back jump shots in attempts to close the gap between themselves and the Gators. Sophomore forward
Dezaray Bright (Keystone Heights, FL / Keystone Heights) snatched an offensive rebound, went straight back up with a layup, halting the Gators' defensive attempts. Sobrino drained a three-pointer from the top to cut the game to a 14-point deficit, 19-33 at halftime.
Fresh out of the break, Bright went up in the paint, scoring yet another layup for Cairn and soon after senior guard
Abi Whitmore (Candor, NY / Little Tree) got to the free-throw line, giving them an extra point towards closing the gap. Sobrino, again made the last goal of the quarter, launching in a three-pointer.
Ipri, Bright, and Brittin tag teamed with four jump shots and a strong pattern of layups in the fourth quarter.
The Highlanders ultimately fell to the Gators 37-73. Brittan, Ipri (career-high), and Sobrino had a three way tie of 10 points on the leaderboard for Cairn. Ipri and Bright led the team in rebounds (6), and Ipri and Whitmore led the team in steals with two apiece.
They will continue their play on Tuesday, December 10th, where they will host Cedar Crest College.
