WBB: Bryn Athyn Holds Off Cairn in Fourth Quarter Sprint

LANGHORNE, PA – The Cairn Women's Basketball team hosted Bryn Athyn on Wednesday for their annual Christmas game, dropping the conference matchup 58-41.

The Lions scored eight points out of the gate until sophomore forward Dezaray Bright (Keystone Heights, FL / Keystone Heights) got Cairn (1-7 / 0-2 UNITED EAST) on the scoreboard with a pair of free throws followed by a jump shot. Junior guard Tatiani Ipri (Mullica Hill, NJ / Gloucester County Christian) cut the lead in half with a jumper as a free throw from sophomore forward Emily Brittin (Winslow, NJ / Pilgrim Academy) and layup by senior guard Kailee Sobrino (Vail, AZ / Empire) put the Highlanders down only three at the end of the quarter.

Bryn Athyn (7-1 / 2-0 UNITED EAST) extended the lead back up to six on two occasions in the second quarter but were held off both times by two scores apiece from Bright and Brittin. Bright would score a jump shot, closing in as Cairn was in a one-possession game at half.

Out of the break, Cairn took their first lead of the night with a layup by Brittin and jump shot from Bright. Sobrino added a jump shot to push the lead to three, but the Lions responded immediately with a triple to tie the game. The Highlanders held on to the lead for just under two minutes before back-to-back three pointers swung Bryn Athyn back into control. Bright knocked down a pair of free throws to briefly hold the lead until the Lions ran back ahead by six.

After a three on the opening fourth quarter possession from Sobrino, Bryn Athyn would go on an 18-5 run on a sprint to the finish as the Highlanders ran out of gas, dropping the game 58-41.

Bright recorded a career-high 21 points with seven rebounds and a pair of assists, shooting 5-6 from the charity stripe. Brittin added 10 points and six boards.

The Highlanders are back on the road Saturday at Notre Dame before closing out 2024 at home Tuesday hosting Cedar Crest College.
