MSOC: #3 Cairn Prevails Over #6 Penn College in Conference Quarterfinal

LANGHORNE, PA - Entering into their first game in this year's postseason, #3 Cairn Men's Soccer came in poised to make a playoff run, shutting out #6 Penn College on Saturday night, 2-0, in the United East Men's Soccer Championship – Quarterfinal.
Ā
Only two minutes into the game, graduate midfielder Matt Lungu (Lilongwe, Malawi / African Bible College- Malawi) was able to put Cairn (11-2-5, 7-0-1 UNITED EAST) on the board, receiving help from senior midfielder Moses Beers (Lancaster, PA / Manheim Twp.) to float in a goal putting the Highlanders ahead early. Ā From there, Lungu and Beers had a combined three shots on goal until senior forward Jesse Brittain (Chester, PA / The Christian Academy) knocked in his 14th goal of the year, growing their lead to 2-0. Nearing the end of the first half, Highlanders kept launching shots at Penn College (11-5-3, 4-1-2 UNITED EAST) as they took a two-goal lead into the break.
Ā
Into the second half, the Highlanders settled in to defend their lead, and that they did. The Wildcats attempted nine shots in the second half, but Cairn's defense and net defense did not let a single one through.
Ā
Lungu had the game winner, scoring his second goal of the season while Brittain added a goal for insurance. Beers was credited with the only assist of the night as he continues to lead the United East in assists this season. Sophomore goalkeeper Xander Jakeway (Lancaster, CA / Quartz Hill) saved all four shots he faced in ninety minutes of work.
Ā
The Highlanders earned themselves their first United East postseason win and will continue run on Tuesday, November 5 at #2 Penn State Abington. Game time TBD.
