NEWARK, NJ – Cairn Women's Basketball fell to Rutgers-Newark in their final game of the John K. Adams Tip-Off Classic, 63-33.
While Rutgers-Newark (2-3) took the lead off the tip, the Highlanders kept within striking distance in the first quarter, knocking down free throws with a score from senior guard
Abi Whitmore (Candor, NY / Little Tree) tying the game at 6-6. The Scarlet Raiders took a one possession lead into the break in action.
In the second quarter, Rutgers-Newark tried to extend the lead but two layups from sophomore forward
Dezaray Bright (Keystone Heights, FL / Keystone Heights) prevented the runaway. Later in the action, the Scarlet Raiders began to run downhill pressing the lead as far as nineteen and finishing the half on a buzzer-beating three, ahead 38-20 after twenty minutes of play.
Cairn (1-2) held the Scarlet Raiders to only ten points in the third quarter but were not able to cut down the lead. In the fourth quarter, Rutgers-Newark went on a 15-4 run to span the ten minutes of game time and take the matchup 63-33.
Senior guard
Kailee Sobrino (Vail, AZ / Empire) was the only Highlander in double digits for scoring with thirteen points, a block, and two steals. Bright had eight points, nine boards, and two steals as well.
Cairn will be on the road once again this coming week with a game at Marywood on Thursday night and at Bryn Mawr on Saturday.
