HACKETTSTOWN, NJ – Cairn Women's Basketball dropped their non-conference matchup with Centenary on the road Wednesday night, 74-51.
Cairn (1-1) scored on their first possession of the game, a triple from senior guard
Kailee Sobrino (Vail, AZ / Empire), holding onto the lead with a bucket from sophomore guard
Ella Quince (Morrisville, PA / Morrisville) and layup by Sobrino. Centenary (2-0) was fouled on the try about halfway through the quarter, making both free throws and adding a three pointer to take the lead for their side. The Cyclones would make both threes in the later part of the quarter, taking an eight-point lead into the break.
In the second, Centenary got the lead up to eleven before sophomore forward
Laryssa Robinson (Mount Laurel, NJ / Life Center) made a layup and another triple by Sobrino, cutting the lead to six. After another Cyclones score, sophomore forward
Audrey Elisondo (Bethesda, MD / James I. O'Neill) and Sobrino scored a triple apiece with the deficit now four as the game went to the half.
Centenary got rolling in the second half, extending the lead to fifteen with a layup from sophomore forward
Dezaray Bright (Keystone Heights, FL / Keystone Heights) and three-point play by junior guard
Tatiana Ipri (Mullica Hill, NJ / Gloucester County Christian) adding the free throw to keep the Cyclones from getting things out of hand. As the horn sounded for the third quarter, Centenary was ahead by fourteen.
Three-straight scores for Centenary opened the fourth quarter with the Highlanders matching on layups from Bright, Robinson and a jumper by Sobrino to even the quarter score. Quince made a jumpshot to cut the lead back to fifteen. The Cyclones made a layup and got a few open looks from three thanks to offensive rebounds, knocking down the final one to push the lead to twenty. Two more triples ended the night for the Highlanders, down twenty-four with two minutes to play as they dropped the matchup 74-51.
Sobrino finished with a game-high 23 points with four made threes and a pair of steals. Bright was next with eight points, as many rebounds, and three steals. Quince had a game-high seven assists with six points and five steals. Elisondo grabbed a game-high ten rebounds.
The Highlanders shot 29.9% (20-67) from the field to Centenary's 36.7% (29-79), shooting just below that from three (34.8%) to Cairn's 18.5% from behind the arc. The Cyclones has twenty-two points off of turnovers with seventeen second-chance points which made up the difference in the score.
Cairn Women's Basketball will take part in the John K. Adams Tip-Off Classic, hosted by Rutgers-Newark, this weekend as the Highlanders will take on Rutgers-Camden on Friday night at 6 p.m. followed by Rutgers-Newark at noon on Sunday.
