Women's Volleyball: Highlanders Push Past Griffins in 3-0 Sweep

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA - The Cairn University Women's Volleyball team concluded this week's road trips heading to Gwynedd Mercy on Thursday night where they swept the Griffins 3-0 to continue their winning streak.

Cairn (6-5) got off to a hot start, taking a 8-2 lead over Gwynedd Mercy (4-7). Freshman outside hitter Bridget Dahn (Smithsburg, MD / Heritage Academy) and junior outside hitter Caroline Conrad (Bangkok, Thailand / International Community School) each tallied a kill as the Highlanders pushed ahead 14-5. The Griffins would battle back to come within five points as the set closed 25-20 in favor of Cairn. Set 2 was played much closer than the first, the Highlanders went up 9-3 on kills by freshmen middle blockers Georgianna Thorpe (Southampton, PA / William Tennent) and Rachael Banks (Sturgis, SD / Sturgis Brown High School). The Griffins took the lead 10-9 on four straight kills. A timeout shifted the momentum as Cairn came back to tie and eventually take the lead back 14-13 and 17-16. Senior setter Olivia Zepp (Westminster, MD / Francis Scott Key) would force set point with a kill and Conrad delivered the set-winning kill as Cairn took the second frame 25-20. Gwynedd Mercy would take a 7-3 lead out of the break and proceed to grow it to 15-8. The Highlanders rallied back starting with a kill from Banks. The Griffins' offense would commit key errors along with another Conrad kill as Cairn came back to lead 23-18. Sophomore libero Payton Cline (Falling Waters, WV / Heritage Academy) would win the match on a service ace as the third set closed 25-19.

Conrad led the Highlander attack with 10 kills followed by Dahn and junior opposite hitter Hendryl Peabody (Bensalem, PA / Faith Baptist Christian Academy) with 7 kills apiece. Banks and Thorpe each had 3 kills. Zepp collected 28 assists in setting up the Cairn attackers.
