Women's Volleyball: Highlanders Secure a Sweep of CCNY on Homecoming

LANGHORNE, PA - The Cairn University Women's Volleyball team opened up the Homecoming action on Saturday, hosting The City College of New York and making quick work of the Beavers, sweeping them 3-0.

The first quarter action opened up even keeled as the lead shifted back-and-forth. Cairn (7-5) began their first rally on freshman outside hitter Bridget Dahn's (Smithsburg, MD / Heritage Academy) serve, creating a 14-6 lead. CCNY (4-6 / 0-3 CUNYAC) would scatter a few more points as junior opposite hitter Hendryl Peabody (Bensalem, PA / Faith Baptist Christian Academy) would hammer home back-to-back kills to take the first set with the Highlanders winning 25-16. The second set saw the Highlanders emerge with a 9-4 lead. The Beavers would rally to come back 9-7 but two kills from sophomore outside hitter Abigail Di Sipio (East Earl, PA / Homeschool) would shift the momentum back Cairn's way. Junior outside hitter Caroline Conrad (Bangkok, Thailand / International Community School) would record five kills out of the next six Highlander points as the lead grew back to 16-8. The Highlanders would never look back as freshman middle blocker Georgianna Thorpe (Southampton, PA / William Tennent) made set point, sending a kill over the net followed by her and Peabody assisting on a block to take the second set 25-13. The action got tense as the third set got underway, things were all tied up at 9-9 before two kills from Dahn and Peabody and three aces by Conrad created a 16-9 Highlander lead. Critical errors by the Beavers would allow the Highlanders to close the match, winning set three, 25-18.

Conrad led the way on the attack with a career-high 16 kills on .438 hitting as well as a season-high 7 aces. Peabody would follow with six kills while assisting on two blocks. Dahn, Di Sipio, and freshman middle blocker Rachael Banks (Sturgis, SD / Sturgis Brown High School) would each add three kills.

The Highlanders are back in action on Tuesday, heading to John Jay College for a 7 p.m. match with the Bloodhounds.
