Women's Volleyball: Highlanders Split Tri-Match with Centenary and Penn St. Lehigh Valley

LANGHORNE, PA. – The Cairn University women's volleyball team hosted Centenary University and Penn State Lehigh Valley Saturday, splitting their tri-match, falling 3-1 (18-25, 25-23, 10-25, 20-25) in the morning match to Centenary and winning 3-0 (25-16, 25-9, 25-16) in the final against and Penn State Lehigh Valley in the afternoon.

Cairn (3-1) dropped the first set against Centenary (2-3) by a score of 20-25 before roaring back to life in the second stanza, claiming ten of the final twelve points to secure the set by a score of 25-23. After Centenary claimed a decisive 25-10 in the third set, the Highlanders fell behind early in the fourth set before securing a 13-3 run. The run was highlighted by two kills apiece from freshman defensive specialist Bridget Dahn (Smithsburg, MD / Heritage Academy) and freshman outside hitter Madison Searls (Seaford, DE / Salisbury Christian Academy). The rest of the fourth set was a back-and-forth affair, with the score tied as late as 15 apiece. Despite the effort, the Cyclones claimed five of the final eight points to secure the 3-1 victory.

In the second match, Cairn handily secured a 25-16 victory in the first set, due in part to 4 aces by freshman opposite Rachael Banks (Sturgis, SD / Sturgis Brown High School) in a 7-0 run (15-5). Cairn continued to put pressure on Penn State – Lehigh Valley (0-2) in the second set, as Dahn had four kills in the frame. The Highlanders finished the second set on a 11-0 run as senior setter Olivia Zepp (Westminster, MD / Francis Scott Key) served for four straight aces during the run, cruising to a 25-9 set victory. Cairn held off a late run by the Nittany Lions in the third set via a team effort, as five different Highlanders were credited with a kill.

Cairn was led on offense in the first match by Dahn and junior outside hitter Caroline Conrad (Bangkok, Thailand / International Community School) who tallied eight and seven kills, respectively. Zepp amassed twenty-two assists and eighteen digs in the contest, both team highs. In the second match, Dahn once again led the team in kills with eight. Zepp tallied another nineteen assists and sophomore libero Payton Cline (Falling Waters, WV / Heritage Academy) led the team with twelve digs on the afternoon. Sophomore outside hitter Abigail Di Sipio (East Earl, PA / Homeschool) totaled five kills in the second match to set a new career high. In addition, Searls and freshman setter Audrey Elisondo (Bethesda, MD / James O'Neill High School) collected their first career kills during the tri-match on Saturday.

Cairn returns to the floor in a road non-conference contest against the Aggies of Delaware Valley University on September 12 at 7 PM in Doylestown, PA.
