LANGHORNE, Pa. – The Cairn University baseball team split their final Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) doubleheader at home against the University of Valley Forge on Saturday afternoon, topping the Patriots 8-3 in game one before dropping a tight 7-5 decision in the nightcap. In between games, the Highlanders honored their five seniors,
Jake Arnoldy (West Grove, PA / Wilmington Christian School),
Cam Culver (Croydon, PA / Truman),
Jake Kraihanzel (Souderton, PA / Liberty),
Jarrett Johnson (Edison, NJ / Timothy Christian) and
Luke Weaver (Little Rock, AK / Baptist Prep), as well as their two seniors who came back for an extra year,
Ben Spadea (Yardley, PA / Pennsbury) and
Bryan Stimpson (Monroeville, NJ / Cornell University) for their contributions to the Cairn Baseball program over their respective careers.
In game one, Cairn (21-19, 12-6 CSAC) struck first with back-to-back RBI-doubles in the second inning by senior
Tyler Fox (Boyertown, PA / West-Mont Christian Academy) and sophomore
Tyler Warr (Langhorne, PA / Neshaminy). Fox's double marked the 100
th career collegiate hit for the senior the third Highlanders this season to surpass 100 career knocks. Valley Forge (14-22, 5-13 CSAC) tied the game off a pair of runs over the next two innings, before the Highlanders broke through with a four-run fourth inning to take command of the contest.
Cairn was led offensively in game one by Fox who posted a game-high three hits, two runs and three RBIs. Warr followed with a pair of knocks and RBIs. Stimpson got the win after going 4.1 innings on the mound, scattering four hits, three runs and striking out three, before junior
Eli Schooley (Horseheads, NY / Horseheads) entered in relief to pick up his second save of the season, throwing 2.2 scoreless innings of two-hit ball.
In game two, UVF took an early 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the first inning, before Warr made history in the bottom half, recording his 72
nd hit of the season to becoming the new Cairn record holder for hits in a single season, surpassing Caleb Lang's 71-hit mark from 2014. The Highlanders posted their first run of the contest in the bottom of the fourth, when junior
Jake Meisel (Newark, DE / Rosemont College) drove in a run off an RBI-double to cut the deficit to one (2-1). Valley Forge extended its lead to 4-1 off a two-run homer in the top of the fifth, before Cairn took its first lead of the contest after Warr drove in two runs, followed up by an RBI-knock by Meisel to give the Highlanders a 5-4 lead. In the top of the sixth innings, UVF utilized an error to start the inning en-route to scoring three runs in the frame to reclaim the advantage at 7-5. Cairn got runners in scoring position in both the sixth and seventh innings, but failed to score as Valley Forge hung on to win game two.
Meisel led the offense with a four-for-four performance in game two with a game-high three RBIs, followed by Warr with a pair of knocks and RBIs. Johnson earned a no-decision on the mound, hurling 4.2 innings, allowing eight hits, four runs and striking out three Patriots. Freshman
Nick Benson (Philadelphia, PA / Father Judge) gave Cairn a chance to win with two scoreless innings in relief.
The Highlanders earned the No. 3 seed in next week's CSAC Championship Tournament, and will travel to Chambersburg for their first round matchup against No. 2 seed Wilson College on Wednesday, May 10. Game time is TBA.
