ALLENTOWN, Pa. – The Cairn University softball team dropped both games of their Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) doubleheader at Cedar Crest College on Sunday afternoon, falling 9-2 in game one before dropping an 8-5 decision in the nightcap.
In game one, Cedar Crest (12-12, 9-1 CSAC) took a 6-0 lead two innings into the contest, including a five-spot in the second inning. Cairn (8-14, 3-5 CSAC) got on the board in the top of the fourth inning after junior
Katie Fauske (Staten Island, NY / Port Richmond) delivered a two-RBI double into the gap to cut the deficit to four (6-2). However, the Falcons responded accordingly with three runs in the bottom half, and kept Cairn off the scoreboard for the remainder of the contest.
Cairn was led offensively in game one by Fauske who posted two hits and two RBIs, including Cairn's only extra-base hit of the game. Senior
Kacey Wees (Irwin, PA / Hempfield) went the distance in the circle, scattering 11 hits, nine runs (eight earned) and striking out a pair.
In game two, Cedar Crest once again took a big early advantage, plating four runs in the opening frame, and another three in the second inning, holding a 7-0 lead after two. The Highlanders got on the board in the top of the fourth, plating three runs highlighted by an RBI-double by senior
Jenna Kenyon (Clarksville, MD / River Hill). After Cedar Crest added an insurance run in the bottom of the fourth, Cairn got back into the contest via freshman
Myiah Petroro's (Long Island, NY / Liberty Online) first career home run, a two-run shot to left-center field to cut the Falcon lead to 8-5 in the sixth inning. Cedar Crest retired the Highlanders in order in the seventh inning to seal the victory.
Kenyon led the offense in game two with a three-for-four performance. With her first hit in game two, Kenyon became just the seventh player in program history to surpass the career 100-hit milestone. Fauske, Petroro and junior
Adriana Shannon (Marlton, NJ / Cherokee) each added multi-hit games in game two. Senior
Theresa Beck (Lansdale, PA / Dock Mennonite Academy) gave the Highlanders four innings of pitching in relief in game two, giving up just one run.
The Highlanders will be back on the field tomorrow when they travel to Clarks Summit University for a conference doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
