Softball: Highlanders Split Road CSAC Doubleheader at Clarks Summit

CLARKS SUMMIT, Pa. – The Cairn University softball team split their Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) doubleheader on the road at Clarks Summit University on Tuesday evening, falling 10-0 in game one before claiming a 10-1 victory in the nightcap.

In game one, Clarks Summit (8-16, 1-5 CSAC) took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. Cairn (9-15, 4-6 CSAC) put two runners in scoring position in the second frame, but could not get them across home. The Defenders blew the game open with an eight-run third inning to take command of the contest.

Cairn was led offensively in game one by senior Theresa Beck (Lansdale, PA / Dock Mennonite Academy), who went two-for-two at the plate. Freshman Sydney Wright (Souderton, PA / Souderton) added one hit and one scoreless inning in the circle.

In game two, Cairn responded by taking an early lead, plating two runs in the first inning, highlighted by an RBI-triple by freshman Myiah Petroro (Long Island, NY / Liberty Online). The Highlanders added two more runs in the third frame, before Clarks Summit got its first and only run of the contest in the bottom half (4-1). Cairn blew the game open in the next two innings, started by senior Kacey Wees (Irwin, PA / Hempfield) with a bases-clearing knock in the fourth, followed up by a three-run fifth inning to give Cairn a 10-1 mercy-rule victory.

Three Highlanders tallied multi-hit performances in game two, Petroro, senior Jenna Kenyon (Clarksville, MD / River Hill) and junior Katie Fauske (Staten Island, NY / Port Richmond). Petroro added a game-high three runs scored and a pair of RBIs to match Kenyon. Wright earned her first victory of the season in the circle, going three innings, scattering four hits, one run and striking out three. Wees finished the final two innings of the bout, allowing no hits.

The Highlanders will be back on the field on Thursday, April 20 when they return home to continue conference play in a doubleheader against the University of Valley Forge inside the Stillman Complex at 3 p.m.
