Men’s Lacrosse: Highlanders Score Five Unanswered Goals in Road CSAC Victory over Bryn Athyn

BRYN ATHYN, Pa. – The Cairn University men's lacrosse team scored the final five goals of the contest as they defeated Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) adversary Bryn Athyn College, 7-4, to move the 2-0 in conference play on Saturday afternoon.

Bryn Athyn (2-4, 0-2 CSAC) opened up the scoring with the first two goals of the contest in the first period, before Cairn (4-5, 2-0 CSAC) got on the board via a tally by junior Jonathan Balsamo (Long Island, NY / Eastport South Manor) at the end of the frame. The Highlander tied the contest at two a-piece after freshman Jacob Root (Bel Air, MD / C. Milton Wright) scored off a feed from classmate Cole Heffler (Eldersburg, MD / Central Maryland Christian) in the second period. The Lions regained the lead with a late goal in the second, and took a 4-2 lead after they scored again to open the third frame. Cairn answered accordingly, with Balsamo lighting the lamp just 16 seconds after Bryn Athyn's fourth tally, followed by a goal right off the face-off by freshman Adain Holliday (Manhattan, NY / Murry Bergtraum) to tie the game at four a-piece. Junior Charles Cotton (Newburgh, NY / Newburgh Free Academy) gave the Highlanders their first lead of the game with a goal at the start of the fourth quarter, and back-to-back goals by Root and Balsamo extended the advantage to 7-4. The game was deemed final with 6:14 remaining in the fourth quarter due to lightning in the area.

Balsamo and Root led the scoring output for Cairn with three goals and two goals, respectively. Holliday grabbed a team-high six ground balls and was nine-for-12 in face-offs, while freshman Nicholas Kennedy (Hudson Valley, NY / Goshen Central) led both teams with a career-high six caused turnovers. Sophomore Nico Cione (Yardley, PA / Pennsbury) earned his fourth win in the cage this season, stopping nine shots.

The Highlanders will be back on the field on Wednesday, April 19 when they return home to take on CSAC foe Rosemont College in a battle of conference unbeatens inside the Stillman Complex at 7 p.m.
