Box Score 2 SCHUYLKILL HAVEN, Pa. – The Cairn University softball team split their non-conference doubleheader at Penn State Schuylkill on Thursday evening, claiming a hard-fought 5-3 victory in game one, before dropping a 9-1 decision in the nightcap.
Cairn (5-9) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in game one after three innings off the back of a pair of RBI-base knocks by sophomore
Abbi Heacock (Media, PA / Delco Christian) and freshman
Myiah Petroro (Long Island, NY / Liberty Online). Penn State Schuylkill (9-5) got a run back in the fourth frame, before freshman
Abby McIntyre (Galloway, NJ / Pilgrim Academy) increased the Highlander lead to 4-1 with a two-RBI single in the fifth. The Lions did not come within two runs for the remainder of the contest.
Heacock led the way for Cairn at the plate with a three-for-four performance and scored a pair of runs. McIntyre and junior
Adriana Shannon (Marlton, NJ / Cherokee) each posted multi-hit days at the plate. Senior
Kacey Wees (Irwin, PA / Hempfield) notched her fifth win in the circle, hurling all seven innings, scattering eight hits and three runs.
Penn State Schuylkill used efficient pitching and defense to win game two, holding the Highlanders to just three hits.
The Highlanders will be back on the field on Saturday, April 1 when they open up Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) play on the road in a doubleheader against Clarks Summit University at 1 p.m.
