Baseball: Benson Earns First Career Win, Highlanders Take Down Penn State Schuylkill

LANGHORNE, Pa. – The Cairn University baseball team won, 9-6, at home against non-conference adversary Penn State Schuylkill inside the Stillman Complex on Wednesday evening.

Cairn (4-9) struck first with two runs in the bottom of the third inning, highlighted by an RBI-double by senior Jake Arnoldy (West Grove, PA / Wilmington Christian School). After Penn State Schuylkill cut the deficit to one (2-1) with a run in the fourth frame, junior Jake Meisel (Newark, DE / Rosemont College) blew the game open with a bases-clearing triple in the fifth inning to make the score 5-1. Cairn poured on the offense with a four-run sixth inning, and led 9-1 entering the eighth. Schuylkill made things interesting with five runs in the final two innings, but the Highlanders held on to secure the victory.

Arnoldy and sophomore Jared Sucro (Kamloops, BC / St. Ann's Academy) each tallied multi-hit efforts on the day, while Meisel drove in a game-high three runs. Senior Joe Greenwood (Wall, NJ / Calvary Academy) also scored a game-high three runs. Freshman Nick Benson (Philadelphia, PA / Father Judge) was lights out in his first collegiate start, tossing five innings of one-run ball, scattering four hits, one run, and striking out eight lions. Freshman Evan Hughes (Levittown, PA / Neshaminy) and Greg Jessup (Dallas, TX / McKinney Christian Academy) each added a scoreless inning in relief, while graduate student Jarrett Johnson (Edison, NJ / Timothy Christian) closed out the final two innings without allowing an earned run.

The Highlanders will be back on the diamond tomorrow when they begin Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) play in a highly anticipated conference semifinal matchup with Wilson College inside the Stillman Complex at 3 p.m.
