Women's Basketball: Highlanders Sweep Tip-Off Tournament, Holding Off Medgar Evers 71-52

LANGHORNE, PA – The Cairn Women's Basketball team took on Medgar Evers College at home to close out their tip-off tournament on Saturday afternoon, holding off the Cougars to take the game 71-52.

Cairn (2-1) won the tip and started with pace, scoring seven unanswered points. As Medgar Evers (1-1) got on the scoreboard, the Highlanders continued to pile up points. Freshman guard Ella Quince (Morrisville, PA / Morrisville HS) made a layup and flushed a jumper as the offense was rolling again. Freshman guard Kenadi Austin (San Antonio, TX / John Marshall) knocked down a triple to start Cairn's scoring run. Freshman guard T'miya Bryant (Raleigh, NC / South Garner HS) hit a jumper in the closing seconds to end the quarter on a 10-0 run.

Bryant opened the second frame with a pair of jump shots with Cairn pushing the lead up to 17. The Highlanders continued to maintain their moderate lead through the quarter. Freshman guard Kayden Jeselskis (Baltimore, MD / Rosedale Christian Academy) knocked down a wing three with a minute to play followed by a pair of bonus free throws by Quince as Cairn went to the break, up 38-21.

The Cougars came out the locker room with a plan, cutting the lead to single digits before junior forward Taylor Hinson (Carney's Point, NJ / Collingswood HS) made three straight layups and a free throw to push the lead back to 13. Freshman guard Makayla Raines (Jonesboro, GA / St. Mary's Academy) made it rain as the Highlanders hit 50 points, up 50-34, with Cairn adding a few more and closing the period 54-40.

Jeselskis assisted Bryant who splashed a three to open the fourth quarter. Quince and Raines each had a layup to put this one out of reach with a 20 point lead in the last five minutes of play. Bryant returned the favor and assisted Jeselskis this time on another triple, closing their second straight win, 71-52.

Bryant led all Highlander scorers with 15 points on 7-11 shooting. Hinson had 14 with eight rebounds. Quince provided 12 with 5 assists and 7 boards.

Bryand and Hinson were named to the All-Tournament team for Cairn along with Sheily Quezada & Jennifer Metra for Medgar Evers. In Saturday's other matchup, Niya Witherspoon and Kylie Grant for Pratt and Malia Bullock & Zhymani Smith for Bryn Athyn were named All-Tournament.

The Highlanders head to Wells College on Wednesday, taking on the Express at 7 p.m.
