LANGHORNE, PA – The Cairn University Women's Volleyball team hosted their 5
th annual Dig Pink game in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness where they hosted the Defenders of Clarks Summit University, sweeping the Defenders 3-0.
Cairn (9-7 / 1-1 United East Skye Division) got underway with a 4-0 run, including junior outside hitter
Caroline Conrad's (Bangkok, Thailand / International Community School) 500
th career kill, recorded on the 3
rd point of the set as the Highlander fans went wild. Clarks Summit (1-19 / 0-3 United East Skye Division) would scatter three points to bring their deficit to 4-3 as the Highlanders pushed forward 10-3 and eventually go up 20-4. Conrad and junior opposite
Hendryl Peabody (Bensalem, PA / Faith Baptist Christian Academy) would each have 3 kills in the set as Cairn took set one, 25-6.
The Highlanders picked up right where they left off, as freshman middle blocker
Rachael Banks (Sturgis, SD / Sturgis Brown HS) notched back-to-back aces as well as two more kills from Peabody as Cairn went up 9-3. Freshman defensive specialist
Hannah Garcia (Tempe, AZ / Tempe Preparatory Academy) and sophomore defensive specialist
Delaney Hollenbeck (Kingsley, PA / Lackawanna College) combined for an ace apiece as well as two kills each from Conrad and freshman middle blocker
Georgianna Thorpe (Southampton, PA / William Tennent) as the Defenders were running out of time with a 20-6 Highlander lead. A Banks kill forced set point as Cairn took set two, 25-7.
Peabody picked up two more kills to start the third frame as Cairn went on a 14-4 run to start. As the Defenders struggled to return the ball to the Highlanders' side, Conrad sent four straight kills into Defender territory as the Highlander faithful kept count of each kill following her 500
th. Freshman outside hitter
Lexi Blair (Lisbon, ME / Gray-New Gloucester High School) would record the final kill for the Highlanders as they took set three, 25-7.
Conrad added 10 kills to her career resume, having surpassed 500 career kills Wednesday evening. Peabody added 7 kills along with four from Thorpe. Blair recorded her first career kill on a single attack.
The Highlanders get a short break before heading to Valley Forge on Saturday to take on the Patriots at 11 a.m.
