LANGHORNE, Pa. – The Cairn University women's basketball team returned to Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) play on Tuesday evening, dropping a 68-63 decision to Rosemont College inside the Mason Activity Center.
Cairn (2-8, 0-4 CSAC) and Rosemont (2-5, 2-2 CSAC) engaged in a tightly-contested bout from the opening tip, and the Highlanders held a 16-15 edge at the end of one. The Ravens claimed the lead at 24-22 at the 3:19 mark, before Cairn ignited an eight point swing over the next two minutes, and led 31-26 at intermission.
The Highlanders maintained their lead at 44-40 at the end of three. Cairn extended its lead up to seven at its largest point of the fourth quarter with 5:26 to play (53-46). The Ravens mounted a seven-point run from that point to knot the game up at 53 a-piece, before sophomore
Kailee Sobrino (Tucson, AZ / Empire HS) ended the run with a triple with 2:58 remaining (56-53). Both teams stayed close down the stretch, tied at 61-all with 56 seconds left, before Rosemont connected on a three with 31 seconds to play. Rosemont maintained its three-point advantage (66-63) with 12 seconds left, but a Rosemont bucket on the next possession iced the contest.
Cairn outshot the Ravens in the contest 38.5% (20-52) to 36% (27-75), while the Ravens held the edge in the rebounding category (48-41). Cairn assisted on 13 of its 20 buckets and connected on 71.4% (20-28) of its chances at the charity stripe.
Three Highlanders finished in double figures, led by Sobrino with a career-high 21 points to go along with a team-high seven assists. Classmate
Taylor Hinson (Carney's Point, NJ / Collingswood HS) matched Sobrino with 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season. Classmate
Tamia Warner (Ewing, NJ / Ewing HS) also recorded a double-double with 16 points and 12 boards.
The Highlanders will return to conference action on Thursday, January 5 when they make the trip to Chambersburg for a tilt with Wilson College at 6 p.m.
