Women’s Basketball: Sobrino Drops Career-High 30 Points, Highlanders' Late Comeback Comes up Short at Keystone

LA PLUME, Pa. – The Cairn University women's basketball team saw their two-game win streak come to a close following a 79-72 defeat on the road at Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) adversary Keystone College on Wednesday evening.

Keystone (6-10, 5-4 CSAC) took the early lead in the contest before Cairn (4-11, 2-7 CSAC) took the lead at 19-18 after a three-pointer by sophomore Kailee Sobrino (Tucson, AZ / Empire HS) at the 2:13 mark of the first frame. The Giants closed the opening frame on a 9-0 run to take a 27-19 lead after one and extended that advantage to 13 (47-33) at intermission.

After both teams matched one another in the third stanza (16-16), Keystone led by 16 at its largest point in the fourth quarter (66-50) with just over nine minutes to play. The Highlanders got the deficit to seven at its lowest point in the fourth, but time ran out on Cairn's comeback effort.

Keystone shot 43.3% (29-67) from the field compared to a 38.1% (24-63) mark for Cairn. Both teams shot it well from outside, as Cairn connected on 42.9% (6-14) of its three-point tries, while Keystone splashed 41% (16-39) of its long range chances. Keystone's bench proved to be the difference, as the Giant reserves accounted for 29 points.

Sobrino had a night to remember for Cairn, pouring in a career-high 30 points on an 11-for-18 night from the floor. Sobrino connected on three triples and was five-for-six from the charity stripe. Sobrino added five boards and a team-high five assists. Sophomore Taylor Hinson (Carney's Point, NJ / Collingswood HS) put forth another double-double, contributing 18 points and a team-high 11 rebounds. Classmate Tamia Warner (Ewing, NJ / Ewing HS) added 16 points, while freshman Dreyonna Graham (Morrisville, PA / Morrisville HS) ripped down a career-high 10 boards.

The Highlanders will be back on the floor on Saturday, January 21 when they return home to take on conference foe Notre Dame of Maryland University inside the Mason Activity Center at 1 p.m.
