Men’s Basketball: Highlanders Fall to Giants in First Conference Defeat

LA PLUME, Pa. – The Cairn University men's basketball suffered their first Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) loss of the 2022-23 season on the road on Wednesday evening, falling to Keystone College by a score of 90-66.

Keystone (8-8, 4-1 CSAC) got rolling early, jetting out to a 15-5 lead just over five minutes in off the back of 15-straight points from sophomore Jack Anderson. Cairn (9-7, 4-1 CSAC) trimmed the deficit to six (30-24) following a triple by junior Aytor Alberto (Willemstad, Curacao / Clarks Summit University) at the 6:29 mark. However, the Giants closed the opening 20 minutes on 14-10 edge, and led Cairn 44-34 at intermission.

The Highlanders hung tight with Keystone through the midway point of the second half, trailing by 12 (62-50), but Keystone went on a 10-2 run from that point to take a 20-point lead (72-52), and closed out the contest.

Keystone shot the lights out to the tune of a 56.7% (34-60) mark from the field and a 57.9% (11-19) percentage from long range. Cairn countered with a 41.9% (26-62) slating from the field. The Giants won the rebounding battle, 39-27, and assisted 28 of their 34 baskets.

Fifth-year Kameron Clark (Ewing, NJ / Ewing HS) and junior Derian Bradford (Lansdale, PA / University of Valley Forge) led Cairn offensively with 12 points a-piece. Clark added nine boards, while classmate Mizz Nyagwegwe (Norristown, PA / Eastern Mennonite University) finished in double figures with 11 points, including three triples. Junior Owen Bradford (Lansdale, PA / University of Valley Forge) added nine points off the bench for Cairn.

Cairn continues its brief road trip on Saturday, January 21, traveling to conference foe Bryn Athyn College (8-8, 2-3 CSAC) for a CSAC tilt at 1 p.m.
