DOYLESTOWN, Pa. – The Cairn University women's soccer team dropped their season opener, 1-0, on the road against the Delaware Valley University Aggies in a non-conference matchup in Doylestown on Thursday evening.
Cairn (0-1) found themselves down early, with the Aggies of Delaware Valley University (1-0) netting the match's only goal just a minute and a half into the game by Gillian Baker. The Highlanders would go on to put up two shots on goal from senior forward
Emily Minard (Columbus, NJ / Life Center Academy) and junior forward
Ashanley Philippe (Santiago, D.R. / Santiago Christian School) in the contest, before a foul against Del Val in the 89
th minute provided the Highlanders with late chance on a free kick to tie things up in the waning seconds of the bout. Junior midfielder
Em Kuansongtham (Bangkok, Thailand / International Community School of Bangkok) took the free kick from just over 30 yards out, but Aggie goalkeeper Olivia Sherwood charged forward to make the save and seal a 1-0 victory for Del Val.
Delaware Valley held the Highlanders to five shots while getting off 17 of their own as well as shots on goal 9-3. Highlander sophomore goalkeeper
Isabelle Lazor (Midland Park, NJ / Eastern Christian H.S.) collected 8 saves in a complete game effort.
The Highlanders are back in action on Saturday, hosting the Mighty Macs of Immaculata University in their home opener at 1 p.m., which will mark the first soccer match ever at the G. Patrick Stillman Athletic Complex.
