Men’s Soccer: Highlanders Drop Home Non-Conference Bid to Widener

LANGHORNE, Pa. – The Cairn University men's soccer team hosted the Pride of Widener University in a non-conference matchup on Saturday afternoon. Despite their efforts, the Highlanders fell by a score of 5-1.

Widener (1-3) was off to an early lead via a goal by Ryan Toporowski in the 16th minute and Sean Fatiga added a second tally in the 24th minute. Cairn (1-2-1) searched for an answer in the first half, but the stout Widener back line detered the Highlanders from finding the net. Widener set the pace for the second half, extending their lead to 3-0 less than a minute underway and pushed the lead to 4-0 in the 62nd minute. Cairn's only answer on the day came from sophomore forward Jesse Brittain (Chester, PA / The Christian Academy) in the 65th minute, assisted by sophomore midfielder Moses Beers (Lancaster, PA / Manheim Township). Widener found the back of the net one last time in the 70th minute to close the match 5-1 in their favor.

Widener led in shots (20-9) and shots on goal (10-6). Brittan led the Highlanders with one goal on three shots followed by graduate student defender Josh Goodyear (Camp Hill, PA / Camp Hill HS) and graduate student midfielder Micah Portis (Abington, PA / Abington Senior High School) who each had two shots. Sophomore goalkeeper Chris Eelman (North Haledon, NJ / Hawthorne Christian Academy) corralled five saves on the afternoon in a complete game effort.

The Highlanders closeout their home stand on Monday under the lights against non-conference foe Lancaster Bible College inside the Stillman Complex at 7 p.m.
