LANGHORNE, Pa. – The Cairn University men's soccer team hosted the Pride of Widener University in a non-conference matchup on Saturday afternoon. Despite their efforts, the Highlanders fell by a score of 5-1.
Widener (1-3) was off to an early lead via a goal by Ryan Toporowski in the 16
th minute and Sean Fatiga added a second tally in the 24
th minute. Cairn (1-2-1) searched for an answer in the first half, but the stout Widener back line detered the Highlanders from finding the net. Widener set the pace for the second half, extending their lead to 3-0 less than a minute underway and pushed the lead to 4-0 in the 62
nd minute. Cairn's only answer on the day came from sophomore forward
Jesse Brittain (Chester, PA / The Christian Academy) in the 65
th minute, assisted by sophomore midfielder
Moses Beers (Lancaster, PA / Manheim Township). Widener found the back of the net one last time in the 70
th minute to close the match 5-1 in their favor.
Widener led in shots (20-9) and shots on goal (10-6). Brittan led the Highlanders with one goal on three shots followed by graduate student defender
Josh Goodyear (Camp Hill, PA / Camp Hill HS) and graduate student midfielder
Micah Portis (Abington, PA / Abington Senior High School) who each had two shots. Sophomore goalkeeper
Chris Eelman (North Haledon, NJ / Hawthorne Christian Academy) corralled five saves on the afternoon in a complete game effort.
The Highlanders closeout their home stand on Monday under the lights against non-conference foe Lancaster Bible College inside the Stillman Complex at 7 p.m.
