Baseball: Late-Game Heroics Propel Highlanders Past Wilson in Game One of Doubleheader Split

LANGHORNE, PA. - The Cairn University baseball team split their doubleheader Saturday afternoon against Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) rival Wilson College, clinching a close 5-4 victory in the first game in walk off fashion before falling short in the second game, 10-1 at the Stillman Complex.

In game one, Cairn (11-9, 4-2 CSAC) graduate student Carson Conradt (Chino Hills, CA / Chino Hills HS) made a strong start, holding Wilson (15-6, 4-2 CSAC) to two scoreless innings, eventually allowing just four runs (three earned) over seven innings pitched. The Highlanders' bats were quiet over the first few innings, until a double from senior Josh Melchior (Boyertown, PA / Valley Forge Baptist Academy) and an RBI single from junior Joe Greenwood (Wall, NJ / Calvary Academy) notched a run to put Cairn on the board in the bottom of the third inning. Sophomore Cameron Culver (Croydon, PA / Truman High School) relieved Conradt mid-seventh, allowing just one run (none earned) to score over ten batters faced, getting the win over 2.2 innings pitched. Capitalizing on a handful of errors by the Phoenix, Cairn went run-for-run with Wilson in the seventh and eight, arriving at the bottom of the ninth down 4-3.

The contest heated up in the ninth, when a walk from freshman Tyler Warr (Langhorne, PA / Neshaminy) set up pinch runner junior Brooks Price (Nashville, TN / Franklin Road Academy) to score on a double smacked down the right-field line by Melchior to tie up the game. Unsatisfied with the RBI for merely tying the game, Melchior worked his way around the diamond to capitalize on a wild pitch and score the winning run as the Highlanders emerged victorious, 5-4. Melchior led the way offensively in game one with a pair of hits and runs scored.

In game two, freshman Joseph Battaglia (Manasquan, NJ / Brentwood Academy) took the mound striking out two over five innings. Despite a few hits scattered over the first five innings, the Highlanders' bats were silent as the Phoenix secured a six-run lead after slugging a three-run homer over the left field fence in the fifth. Junior Jake Kraihanzel (Bethlehem, PA Liberty High School) came in for Battaglia, tossing one inning and allowing two more runs to bring the score to a Highlander deficit of 8-0. The Highlanders had a spark of life in the sixth when graduate student Brian Amantia Jr. (Columbus, NJ / The King's Christian School) smacked a single into right field and promptly stole second. Warr followed in suit, slamming a double deep into right to score Amantia, notching the team's only run in game two. Graduate student Ben Spadea (Yardley, PA / Pennsbury H.S) relieved Kraihanzel in the sixth, allowing no runs and facing four batters. Spadea was replaced with graduate student Bryan Stimpson (Monroeville, NJ / Cornell University), who struck out two and allowed two additional runs to boost Wilson's lead to 10-1. Ronaldhino Alcin (Miami, FL / North Miami Beach SHS) closed out for the Highlanders, striking out two and walking one. Warr paced the offense, collecting a pair of doubles to match Melchior in game two.

The Highlanders hit the road on Monday to challenge the Chargers of Lancaster Bible College in non-conference play for a single, nine-inning contest at 3:30 p.m.
