LANGHORNE, Pa. – The Cairn University softball team dropped both games at home in their Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) doubleheader against Wilson College, falling 12-2 in game one before suffering a 4-1 decision in game two inside the Stillman Complex on Senior Day on Saturday. In between contests, the Highlanders honored their lone senior,
Victoria Ruitto (Ellington, CT / The Cornerstone Christian School) with a brief ceremony for her contributions to the program this year.
Wilson (18-9-1, 10-2 CSAC) proved its worth as the No. 1 team in the conference standings in game one, jetting out to an 8-0 lead through the first six innings of the contest, before Cairn (6-20, 3-9 CSAC) got on the board with back-to-back RBI base knocks from junior
Jenna Kenyon (Clarkesville, MD / River Hill) and sophomore
Adriana Shannon (Marlton, NJ / Cherokee). The Phoenix put the contest away with a four-spot in the top half of the seventh. Kenyon led the Highlander offense with a team-high two hits. Junior
Kacey Wees (Irwin, PA / Hempfield) put forth a complete game effort in the circle, giving up just two earned runs.
In game two, Wilson posted a run in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead and added three runs over the contest to hold a 4-0 advantage heading into the bottom of the seventh frame. In that inning, the Highlanders made a run, starting with a leadoff double by junior
Theresa Beck (Lansdale, PA / Dock Mennonite Academy), before junior
Emma Holmes (Newtown, PA / Council Rock North) notched Cairn's lone run of the contest off of a sacrifice fly. Beck and Kenyon led Cairn's offense in game two, each posting a team-high two hits, while Beck recorded its lone RBI. Wees hurled another complete game, scattering eight hits and four runs.
The Highlanders will be back on the field on Wednesday, April 27 when they hit the road for a CSAC doubleheader at Rosemont College starting at 3 p.m.
