LANGHORNE, Pa. – The Cairn University baseball team swept their non-conference doubleheader at home inside the Stillman Complex against Centenary University (NJ) on Tuesday, winning 4-3 in game one in walk-off fashion in extra innings before claiming a 23-7 victory in the nightcap, completing the season sweep against the Cyclones.
Centenary (14-16, 4-5 Atlantic East) took the early advantage in game one, scoring the first three runs of the contest, before Cairn (19-11, 6-4 CSAC) tied the game with three runs in the bottom of the second inning off a three-run blast to left-center field by freshman
Tyler Warr (Langhorne, PA / Neshaminy). Neither team scored a run for the rest of regulation, sending the game to extra innings. In the bottom half of the eighth inning, senior
Caleb Edman (Nokesville, VA / Norther Virginia Community College) got on via a walk and eventually crossed the plate with the winning run when Warr reached on a Cyclone throwing error.
Cairn was led offensively in game one by Warr with a pair of hits, three RBIs and two runs scored. Graduate Student
Bryan Stimpson (Monroeville, NJ / Cornell University) got the win after tossing two scoreless innings in relief, while classmate
Ben Spadea (Yardley, PA / Pennsbury) threw a scoreless sixth frame. Freshman
Joseph Battaglia (Mansquan, NJ / Brentwood Academy) turned in five innings, getting the no-decision as the starter after scattering five hits, three runs (two earned) and striking out three.
In game two, Centenary held a 7-4 advantage after the top half of the fourth inning, before the Highlanders exploded with their biggest offensive outburst of the season to the tune of a 12-spot in the bottom half of the fourth to take 16-7 lead. Cairn posted seven more runs over the next two innings to firmly take control and close out the contest.
Warr again led the Highlander bats with a career-high four hits to go along with four runs scored and four RBIs, while junior
Samuel Spadea (Yardley, PA / Pennsbury) notched a three-for-three day at the plate with three RBIs and a pair of runs. Junior
Brooks Price (Nashville, TN / Franklin Road Academy) followed with a pair of hits, three runs scored and three RBIs (both career-highs). Senior
Dom Maglione (Hamilton, NJ / Steinert) improved to 4-0 on the season after going four innings on the hill, while sophomores
Connor Ferguson (Laguna Niguel, CA / Capistrano Valley Christian School) and
Ethan Fineman (Langhorne, PA / Neshminy) and freshman
Brady Hill (Bethlehem, PA / Notre Dame Green Pond) each threw a scoreless inning out of the pen.
Cairn will be back on the diamond on Wednesday, April 20 when it continues its busy week of contests inside the Stillman Complex against Delaware Valley University at 3:30 p.m. in a rematch of Cairn's 12-inning affair earlier this season in Myrtle Beach.
