Softball: Highlanders Collect First CSAC Doubleheader Sweep of Season

LANGHORNE, Pa. – The Cairn University softball swept Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) adversary Clarks Summit University in a conference doubleheader inside the Stillman Complex on Tuesday, taking game one by a score of 7-2 and winning the second game by an 8-2 margin.

Clarks Summit (3-14, 1-7 CSAC) jumped on the board first in game one with a run in the top of the first, before Cairn (5-15, 2-6 CSAC) tied the game at one a-piece in the second frame. The Defender regained the lead with a run in the third inning, before the Highlanders took their first lead of the contest with a pair of runs in the fifth inning, highlighted by an RBI-double by freshman Abbi Heacock (Media, PA / Delco Christian) to take a 3-2 lead. The Highlanders took firm control of the contest in the sixth inning on a pair of two-RBI base knocks from Heacock and junior Emma Holmes (Newtown, PA / Council Rock North) gave Cairn full momentum. Heacock paced the offense in game one with two hits and a game-high three RBIs, while freshman Julia Bruestle (Abington, PA / Abington) posted a two-for-two day at the plate. Junior Kacey Wees (Irwin, PA / Hempfield) stymied the Defenders in the circle, getting the win after tossing a complete game, scattering six hits, two runs and striking out seven.

In game two, Clarks Summit once again scored first with two runs in the top of the first inning. However, those would be the only two runs the Defenders would plate in game two, as Cairn utilized timely hitting again to score the final eight runs of the bout. Heacock again paced Cairn offensively with a game-high three hits, two RBIs and two runs scored, while Wees totaled a pair of base knocks. Junior Theresa Beck (Lansdale, PA / Dock Mennonite Academy) got the win in the circle after going four innings in relief, only allowing one hit and zero runs in her best outing of the season,

The Highlanders will be back on the field on Tuesday, April 19 when they hit the road to Lancaster for a non-conference doubleheader with Lancaster Bible College starting at 3 p.m.
