LANCASTER, Pa. – The Cairn University softball team traveled to Lancaster Bible College for a non-conference doubleheader against the Chargers on Tuesday, dropping game one by a score of 4-3 in walk-off fashion before falling 10-1 in the nightcap.
Cairn (5-17, 2-6 CSAC) got the early edge in game one when junior
Theresa Beck (Lansdale, PA / Dock Mennonite Academy) got the Highlanders on the board with an RBI-double in the top of the first inning. The Highlanders increased their lead to 2-0 off an RBI-single from junior
Jenna Kenyon (Clarkesville, MD / River Hill) in the top of the third. Lancaster Bible (7-20, 6-12 United East) tied the game with a pair of runs in the bottom half and took the lead when it scored again in the fourth inning to make it 3-2. The Highlanders knotted the game up at three a-piece in the sixth inning, before LBC walked off with a run in the bottom of the seventh to steal game one. Freshman
Abbi Heacock (Media, PA / Delco Christian) and sophomore
Katie Fauske (Staten Island, NY / Port Richmond) led the Highlanders offensively with a pair of base knocks. Junior
Kacey Wees (Irwin, PA / Hempfield) was excellent in the circle once again for Cairn, tossing 6.2 innings, scattering nine hits, four runs (one earned) and striking out three.
In game two, LBC rode the momentum from its walk-off triumph in game one and scored six runs over the first two innings of the contest. Cairn got its lone run of the bout in the top of the second inning when junior
Adriana Shannon (Marlton, NJ / Cherokee) connected on an RBI-double to score classmate
Emma Holmes (Newtown, PA / Council Rock North).
The Highlanders will be back on the field on Thursday, April 21 when they return to Colonial State Athletic Conference (CSAC) action on the road at Notre Dame of Maryland University for a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
