Baseball: Giants Best Highlanders in Road CSAC Doubleheader

LA PLUME, Pa. – The Cairn University baseball team dropped a doubleheader at Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) adversary Keystone College on Monday, falling 13-4 in game one before dropping a 9-2 decision to the Giants in game two.

Cairn (12-11, 4-4 CSAC) jumped off to a hot start in a big way, when senior Joshua Melchior (Boyertown, PA / Valley Forge Baptist Academy) sent a pitch over the right-field wall to give the Highlanders a 1-0 lead on the first plate appearance of the game. Keystone (10-12, 5-1 CSAC) to control, plating six runs to take a 6-1 lead in to the seventh inning. The Highlanders got back into it when graduate student Brian Amantia Jr. (Columbus, NJ / King's Christian) launched his fourth long-ball of the year to make it 6-2, followed by a two-RBI single by junior Joe Greenwood (Wall, NJ / Calvary Academy) to cut the deficit to two (6-4). However, the Giants blew the game open with seven-run eighth inning to take command and seal the victory.

Cairn was led in game one by Melchior with a season-high three hits, one run and one RBI. Graduate student Carson Conradt (Chino Hills, CA / Chino Hills) got the start on the hill, tossing five innings, scattering six hits, five runs (two earned) and striking out four.

Keystone got the early advantage in game two with three runs in the bottom half of the first inning, until Cairn plated their first run on a double-steal that resulted in a throwing error in the second frame. The Giants utilized another big swing of momentum, crossing six runners to take a 9-1 lead to take control of the bout.

Melchior again paced the Highlanders in game two with a pair of base knocks. Freshman Ronaldhino Alcin (Miami, FL / North Miami Beach) turned in the Highlanders best showing on the bump, going 3.1 innings in relief, scattering two hits, two runs (one earned) and striking out three.

Cairn will be back on the diamond on Tuesday, April 12 when it stays on the road, traveling to Grantham for a single, nine-inning non-conference bid with Messiah University at 3 p.m.
