Softball: Wees Tosses Complete-Game Shutout in Highlanders Home Debut Victory at Stillman Complex

LANGHORNE, Pa. – The Cairn University softball team won, 2-0, in their home debut at the brand-new G. Patrick Stillman Complex over non-conference foe John Jay College on Thursday.

Cairn (3-9) and John Jay (2-5) engaged in a pitcher's duel throughout the contest, as junior Kacey Wees (Irwin, PA / Hempfield) battled with John Jay hurler America Rivera to keep the batters at bay. The game remained scoreless through five innings, before Cairn broke through with its first run of the contest after freshman Abbi Heacock (Media, PA / Delaware Country Christian School) laced an RBI-double near the right field pole to give the Highlanders a 1-0 lead. Cairn added a second run in the bottom of the sixth inning when Wees delivered an RBI-single into the gap to score sophomore Adriana Shannon (Marlton, NJ / Cherokee) to give Cairn a 2-0 advantage. Those runs proved to be all Wees needed, as the junior shut down the Bloodhounds in the final inning to give the Highlanders the victory.

Heacock paced the Highlanders offensively with a two-for-three day at the plate with a double and a triple. Shannon added a hit and a run scored, while Wees tallied one hit and an RBI. Wees dazzled in the circle, tossing her second career complete-game shutout over seven inning, scattering five hits and striking out a season-high eight hitters.

The Highlanders will be back on the field on Saturday, April 2 when they are back inside the Stillman Complex for a Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) doubleheader against Cedar Crest College at 1 p.m.
