ABINGTON, Pa. – The Cairn University softball team took to the field for the first time since their spring break trip on Saturday, falling in a road non-conference doubleheader against Penn State Abington, 14-2 in game one and 11-8 in game two.
In game one, Penn State Abington (5-5) had the bats working, scoring six runs in the first inning and kept the Highlanders at bay en route to a 14-2 victory. Cairn (2-7) was led by junior
Jenna Kenyon (Clarksville, MD / River Hill) with a team-high two hits.
In game two, the Nittany Lions started out hot again scoring the first 11 runs of the contest. With their backs against the wall, Cairn fought back, scoring four runs in the top of the fourth inning, followed by another four runs in the fifth frame to cut the deficit to just three (11-8). The Highlanders had two more chances to cut into the Nittany Lion advantage in the sixth and seventh innings, but could not get a runner on base. Theresa Beck (Lansdale, PA / Dock Mennonite Academy) with a team-high three hits and a pair of runs scored. Sophomores
Adriana Shannon (Marlton, NJ / Cherokee) and
Kamiah Caraway (Morrisville, PA / Bucks County Community College) followed with a pair of base knocks, while Caraway tallied a pair of runs scored. Junior
Kacey Wees (Irwin, PA / Hempfield) led the Highlanders in the circle, tossing four innings in relief and giving up three runs.
The Highlanders will be back on the field on Saturday, March 26 when they travel to La Plume to open up Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) play at Keystone College at 1 p.m.
