PRINCETON, N.J. – The Cairn University men's basketball team fell by a score of 92-58 in an exhibition bout with NCAA Division I, Ivy League foe Princeton University on the road on Wednesday evening.
Princeton (5-2) came out smoking in the first half, scoring the first 17 points of the contest over the first six minutes before Cairn (4-2) got on the board with a bucket by fifth-year
Kameron Clark (Ewing, NJ / Ewing). The Highlanders kept the distance at 15 at the 11:33 mark (26-11), before the Tigers extended their advantage to 29 (51-22) at intermission.
The Tigers boosted the lead to 37 at its highest point with (86-49) with just over six minutes to play, before two-straight baskets by fifth-year
Mizz Nyagwegwe (Norristown, PA / Eastern Mennonite University) and junior
Wes Murray (Reading, PA / Exeter) trimmed the lead to 33 (86-53). Cairn hung in there with the preseason No. 2 pick in the Ivy League standings, and scored 36 second half points in a losing effort.
Princeton posted a 47.1% (32-68) mark from the field compared to a 35.5% (22-62) percentage for Cairn. The Highlanders played much more efficiently in the second half, shooting 43.8% (14-32) with six threes. Princeton won the game on the glass, dominating the boards to a 54-26 advantage.
Cairn was led offensively by fifth-year
Jesse Rivera (Doylestown, PA / Central Bucks East) and Murray, as the duo accounted for 25 of Cairn's 58 total points, with Rivera pouring in a game-high 13 and Murray with 12, respectively.
Junior
Matt Lucas (Quakertown, PA / Quakertown) followed with eight points, while fifth-year
Dashaun Cain (Wilmington, DE / Red Lion Christian Academy) and Clark led Cairn on the glass with five boards a-piece.
The Highlanders will be back on the hardwood on Saturday, December 3 when they return home to take on non-conference adversary Saint Joseph's University-Brooklyn inside the Mason Activity Center at 3 p.m.
