LANGHORNE, Pa. – The Cairn University women's basketball team won, 60-53, at home against non-conference adversary Trinity University (DC) on Tuesday evening, marking their second victory of the young season.
"Sophomores Taylor Hinson (Carney's Point, NJ / Collingswood HS) and Kailee Sobrino (Tucson, AZ / Empire HS) provided us with a strong offensive presence tonight." remarked Head Coach
Allen Kuiper.
"12 assists from Sobrino and 32 points from Hinson made us hard to beat tonight. As a team, I thought the women remained relatively collected when Trinity made a late push."
Cairn (2-2) jetted out to a 14-6 lead over Trinity (0-3) after one quarter, capped off by a jumper by freshman
Payton Cline (Falling Waters, WV / Heritage Academy) to end the frame. The Highlanders extended their advantage to double digits (28-16) at intermission, led by a 10-point frame by Hinson.
The Tigers mounted a comeback in the third stanza, pouring in 20 points in the quarter to cut the deficit back down to single digits (43-36) heading into the final ten minutes. Cairn got the lead up to as high as 13 (54-41) with just over five minutes to play, before Trinity sparked a 12-4 sprint to slice the deficit down to five (58-53) with under two minutes to go in regulation. However, Cairn kept the Tigers off the scoreboard for the remainder of the contest en-route to victory.
Cairn shot 40.6% (26-64) from the field compared to a 33.8% (24-71) mark for the Tigers. Both teams matched one another in the rebounding category (43-43), while Cairn dished out a season-high 23 assists compared to 11 for Trinity.
As Coach Kuiper mentioned, Hinson poured in a career-high 32 points to go along with 11 rebounds on the night, her third double-double of the season thus far. Hinson was the only Highlander in double figures. Sobrino added a career-high 12 assists to pair with seven points and seven boards. Freshmen
Kaitlyn Barry (Brick, NJ / Brick Memorial HS) and
Dreyonna Graham (Morrisville, PA / Morrisville HS) each added six points. Graham and Cline each tied a game-high with three steals.
The Highlanders will be back on the floor on Tuesday, November 22 when they begin Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) play at home against Bryn Athyn College at 5 p.m.
