LANGHORNE, Pa. – The Cairn University women's basketball team lost, 60-41, at home against non-conference adversary Centenary University (NJ) on Monday evening.
Offense was tough to come by for both teams in the opening frame, as Centenary (4-2) held a 10-2 lead over Cairn (2-3) after one. Both teams settled into their respective offensive game plans in the second stanza, as the Cyclones opened up a 22-6 lead midway through the quarter. The Highlanders closed the first half on an 11-4 run and trailed the Cyclones 26-17 at intermission.
The deficit remained nine at the end of the third (39-30), before Cairn made its run in the final frame, cutting the lead to just five after two buckets by sophomore
Tamia Warner (Ewing, NJ / Ewing) to open the quarter (39-34). However, a 17-4 run by the Cyclones over the next five minutes helped Centenary put away the Highlanders and seal the victory.
Centenary narrowly out shot Cairn in the contest 35.1% (27-77) to 34% (18-53) and narrowly bested the Highlanders on the glass (47-45). The Cyclones won the game in the turnover department, forcing 31 Highlander miscues and scored 31 points off those turnovers.
Cairn was led offensively by Warner, who registered her second career double-double with a team-high 13 points to pair with a career-high 15 rebounds. Freshman
Kaitlyn Barry (Brick, NJ / Brick Memorial) followed in double figures with 10 points and nine rebounds, while classmate
Dreyonna Graham (Morrisville, PA / Morrisville) added seven points and a team-high three steals.
The Highlanders will be back on the hardwood on Wednesday, November 30 when they travel to Morristown to open up Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) play on the road against Saint Elizabeth University at 7 p.m.
