PHOENIXVILLE, Pa. – The Cairn University men's soccer team posted their fifth-straight shutout following a 3-0 victory on the road at Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) adversary the University of Valley Forge on Tuesday evening, remaining unbeaten in CSAC play.
"Playing on the road at Valley is always a tough match." remarked Head Coach
Luke Gibson.
"I was pleased with our response in the second half to get a result we needed."
Cairn (8-5-4, 4-0-2 CSAC) battled through a tight-knit, defensive-centric first half with Valley Forge (3-12-1, 0-5-1 CSAC). Despite out shooting the Patriots 9-3 throughout the first 45 minutes, both teams remained deadlocked at intermission. The Highlanders came out with a purpose in the second half, netting the first goal of the contest when senior
David Falcon (Wayne, NJ / Hawthorne Christian) deposited his sixth goal of the season on a rebound from sophomore
Jesse Brittain (Chester, PA / The Christian Academy) to give Cairn a 1-0 lead in the 51
st minute. Cairn added its second tally just five minutes later, when junior
Joshua Smith (Attleboro, MA / Homeschooled) came flying in to score off a cross from sophomore
Chase Segool (Aston Township, PA / Sun Valley) to give the Highlanders a 2-0 advantage. Cairn added an insurance goal in the 73
rd minute, when Brittain created some space just outside the box and fired a shot past the keeper's left side to give Cairn a 3-0 lead, a lead it held for the duration of the contest.
Cairn out shot Valley Forge (21-10) and bested the Patriots in shots on goal (12-5). Cairn generated a season-high 10 corner kick opportunities in the win. Brittain led the offensive effort with a goal and an assist, while fifth-year net minder
Kameron Clark (Ewing, NJ / Ewing HS) posted his fifth-straight shutout between the pipes, corralling five saves in the process.
Tuesday's victory sets up a conference tilt on Saturday, October 29 with huge conference playoff implications, as the Highlanders welcome defending CSAC champion Rosemont College to Langhorne with potential seeding in the upcoming CSAC Championship Tournament on the line in their final regular season contest at 7 p.m.
