UNION, NJ - On an unusually cold spring evening, the Highlanders traveled to Kean University for their second official match as a program.
The Highlanders certainly faced a daunting challenge Thursday night, as Kean's well-established men's lacrosse program has a tradition of winning dating back over fifty years. However, Cairn battled valiently throughout the evening, as it is clear that both Coach Culpepper and his men are committed to building the program through hard work on the turf.
Ultimately, the Highlanders were overpowered by the depth of the Cougars, who had 15 players record a goal en route to a 25-1 Kean victory. Overall, the Cougars outshot the Highlanders 52-11, and were able to keep possession and momentum on their side with a 53-11 ground ball advantage. On a positive note, the Highlanders were able to shave turnovers from their first game total and force 17 Kean turnovers; the Highlanders also found themselves on the man-advantage 6 times.
The lone Highlander goal came early in the fourth quarter, when
Jonathan Balsamo scored unassisted. Balsamo has now scored two goals in as many games.
Normally a defenseman,
Jay Stange was called into action as the Highlanders' goaltender and recorded 8 saves.
The Highlanders hit the road once again on Saturday, traveling to West Virginia to take on the Catamounts of Potomac State College at 2 PM.
