Trey Valiton and a single from #28
Caleb Edman worked a run around the diamond in the bottom of the first to tie up the game, 1-1. After allowing a Patriot homerun,
Connor Ferguson took over for Conradt in the third inning, picking off a runner at first and striking out another in his first inning on the mound. A handful of errors and a single from Sam Spadea set the bases for a triple from
Brian Amantia Jr. to bring the score to Cairn 3, UVF 2. After a few quiet innings for both teams, senior
Nat Ross took over for Ferguson in the sixth to close out the game with no further Patriot runs.
The Highlanders bats lit up in the bottom of the sixth, starting when junior
Joshua Melchior slammed his first collegiate home run to score two, bringing the Highlander lead to 5-2. Valiton followed Melchior with a solo shot of his own, notching another run for Cairn. After a few Patriot errors and excellent baserunning by Amantia Jr. and
Tyler Fox, game one ended with a Highlander victory of 7-2.
Both of the Highlanders' home run hitters had excellent all-around games at the plate, with Mechior going 2-4 with 2 RBIs and Valiton going 2-3 with an RBI and 3 runs scored. Ferguson pitched excellently in relief of Conradt and picked up the win, going 3.0 innings and allowing no runs while striking out 3.
GAME TWO - Jake Kraihanzel stepped onto the mound to start game two for Cairn, tossing five innings and striking out four.
After a quiet top of the first, the Highlanders started off hot with a pair of walks and a hit by pitch to load the bases for
Tyler Fox, who smacked a single to center field to score two runs. A single from
Quinton Pertkiewicz scored an additional run to push the Highlander lead to 3-0. Another quiet inning passed for the Patriots before Melchior came up to bat in the second and shot a double out to center field, setting the scene for an RBI triple from
Trey Valiton to extend the lead. A handful of Patriot errors then pushed the Highlander lead to 5-0.
The Patriots responded by knocking a run in, but ultimately were unable to rally in the third inning. A walk from Mike Sorowice brought up
Brooks Price, who singled to push in another run for the Highlanders in the fourth, making the score 6-1. After another quiet inning, the Highlanders' bats heated up again to score five runs thanks to singles from Amantia Jr, Fox, and Pertkiewicz and a few Patriot errors.
Cameron Culver took the mound for Kraihanzel in the top of the sixth, allowing two Patriot runs but getting a strikout and a groundout to end the inning without too much damage.
Bryan Stimpson, the Highlander's go-to closer, came in in the top of the seventh and shut the door on the Patriots, striking out three in a row to end the second game at 12-3 in the Highlanders' favor.
