LANGHORNE, PA-- The Highlanders honored the careers of their two seniors,
Collin Benjamin and
Scott Bassill, before taking down the University of Valley Forge 3-0 to stay perfect in conference play.
Both Bassill and Benjamin have been key contributers to the men's volleyball program since their freshman year, and have been asked to take on a much bigger role within the program each year. Benjamin's skill as a middle blocker has grown tremendously since his freshman year, and he currently leads the Highlanders in kills and blocks, is second on the team in aces, and is third on the team with a hitting percentage of .320 this season. Bassill began his Highlander career as an outside hitter, but transitioned to the starting setter role his junior year and has taken the conference by storm in that position. His skill as a setter and ability to connect with his hitters has been the key to the Highlander's balanced attack this season, and his 198 assists leads the CSAC so far this season. Both Bassill and Benjamin were named to the inaugural CSAC all-conference team in 2020, and Bassill was also tabbed as Player of the Year in the conference. Coach
Nate Seidle is thankful for both of these athletes and their leadership for the past four years, and is excited to see them finish the season and careers strong!
After the pregame ceremony, the Highlanders got right to work against the Patriots, winning the first set easily by a landslide score of 25-5. In set one, the Highlanders hit a blistering .412 while holding the Patriots to a -.214 hitting percentage; UVF hit a -.159 for the entirety of the match.
In set two, the Highlanders mixed up their line up, subbing in pin hitters
Shea Scott and
Cameron Cronk. The Patriots fought back in the second set, thanks to a stretch of Highlander errors late in the set, but a Benjamin kill, a
Josh Moyer service ace, and a Patriot error shut down the Patriot comeback and ended the set in the Highlander's favor, 25-17.
Set three saw yet another Highlander switch, with Bassill moving back to his OH position from earlier in his career and reserve OH
Shea Scott taking the reigns as setter. Bassill was able to put down a kill on his first attempt, and Scott dished out 7 assists in the third set. The Highlanders held the Patriots to only 3 kills in the third set, and while some Cairn hitting errors kept the game within reach for the Patriots, the HIghlanders were able to close the door and earn a third set victory, 25-17, and yet another match sweep 3-0.
Benjamin led all players with 7 kills on his senior day; he also chipped in an ace and 3 blocks. Despite only setting for two sets, Bassill led all players with 17 assists.
The Highlanders are away for the rest of the season leading up to the CSAC playoffs. They next face the Monarchs of King's College in the second of two scrimmages this season on April 17th.
