Women’s Volleyball: Highlanders Extend Win Streak to Six Matches in Doubleheader Sweep at UVF

PHOENIXVILLE, Pa. – The Cairn University women's volleyball team won its fifth- and sixth straight wins (longest win streak since 2013) of the season with a doubleheader sweep at Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) foe University of Valley Forge on Saturday. The Highlanders won the first match 3-0 (25-13, 25-18, 25-13) and also earned a 3-0 (25-23, 25-11, 25-12) shutout in the second match. The first match counted towards the official CSAC standings.

In the first match, Cairn (8-11, 4-1 CSAC) dominated from the first set onwards, as Valley Forge (1-11, 0-6 CSAC) held its largest lead in any set by a score of 4-2 in the first set. The Highlanders had to fend off a late rally by the Patriots in the second frame, but the Highlanders stayed firm en route to the shutout victory. Cairn was led in the first match by senior Allison Barnes (Macungie, PA / Salem Christian), who continued her dominant week with a match-high 10 kills and tied her career-high hitting percentage (which she set last match) at .500. Freshman Peyton Queen (Orlando, FL / Lake Mary) followed with eight kills and tied a match-high with 10 digs with junior Kali Burres (Wanaque, NJ / Hawthorne Christian). Sophomore Olivia Zepp (Westminster, MD / Francis Scott Key) dished out a match-high 26 assists.

In match two, the Highlanders had to battle to take the first set from the Patriots, as both teams were tied at 23-23 in the closing moments of the set. However, two-straight kills by Barnes gave the Highlanders the first set victory. Cairn used that momentum to handily dismantle the Patriots in the second and third sets. Burres paced the Highlanders offense in the second match with a match-high 10 kills and also scooped up 12 digs, matching junior Lizzy Fay (Langhorne, PA / Neshaminy). Barnes followed with six kills and Zepp handed out a match-high 18 assists. Freshman Hendryl Peabody (Bensalem, PA / Faith Baptist Christian Academy) led the Highlander defense with a career-and match high 15 digs.

Cairn will be back on the court on Tuesday, October 19 when it returns home for a CSAC contest with Wilson College inside the Mason Activity Center at 7 p.m.
