READING, PA- The Highlanders played one of the stranger baseball games in recent memory the other night. Cairn made a dramatic comeback in the top of the 9
th thanks to Brian Amantia's go-ahead grand slam, but the celebration was ultimately defeated by their most unassailable opponent, the sun.
Â
Sam Spadea opened the scoring for the Highlanders with a solo bomb, but the Highlanders trailed 5-1 after a three run fourth inning for the Lions. The Highlanders bounced back, scoring four unanswered in the sixth on RBI singles from
Caleb Edman and
Ryan Clark. Each team traded runs in the 7
th and the next inning passed without any drama. The top of the 9
th brought dramatics as Brian Amantia smashed a two-strike, two-out grand slam to take the lead. With the Highlanders holding onto the lead, the game was halted in the bottom of the 9
th due to darkness, reverting the score to the prior inning and handing the Highlanders an unconventional, and potentially undeserved loss.
Â
Nate Wilson and
Quinton Pertkiewicz led the Highlanders with 3 hits each, while
Dom Maglione pitched 4.1 innings of 1 run ball to lead the Highlanders.
Â
Cairn will rebound and look forward to a spring break trip starting in just two days. The Highlanders will head to Florida for four doubleheaders, culminating in a match up with Gettsyburg College at Dodgertown.
