Highlanders Sweep Competition in Final Tri-Match

KEUKA PARK NY- The Highlanders capped off an excellent end of season stretch over the weekend, defeating the College of Saint Elizabeth 3-0 and eking out a 3-2 win over Keuka College in their final match of the season.

The Highlanders swept the College of Saint Elizabeth with relative ease. Cairn played a close first set, leading from the start and defeating the Eagles 25-18. The Highlanders cruised over the remaining two sets, allowing almost no room for the Saint Elizabeth offense to operate and utilizing a powerful attack to win 25-15, 25-17. The Highlanders had their hands full against Keuka. Cairn took the first set 25-19, but the Wolves battled back in front of their home crowd to take the next two sets 25-18. Needing a win in the fourth set, the Highlanders held the lead for much of the set, until a Keuka kill evened the score at 19-apiece. Spurred forward by their senior leaders, the Highlanders took control. Caleb Myers crushed a kill to give Cairn the lead, Scott Bassill picked up an ace, and a couple points later Myers won the set with another kill. With momentum firmly on their side, the Highlanders scored four straight to take the lead in the fifth set. Ryan Ludvik and Anton Deleon came up with huge kills to put Cairn up 10-6, but the Wolves never quit and brought the score within one point 10-9. After a timeout from the Highlanders, Myers notched another kill, Collin Benjamin came up with an ace, and Ben Norton carded a kill to bring Cairn one point from the victory. Fittingly, the match ended on the shoulders of Ryan Ludvik and Juston Wolgemuth. The senior stalwarts teamed up, with Wolgemuth setting the table for a thunderous Ludvik kill to end the match and their careers with one final win. Ludvik finished one dig shy of another triple-double (13 kills, 26 assists, 9 digs), Anton Deleon (11 kills) and Ben Norton (10 kills) each finished with double-digit kills, and Wolgemuth (15 digs) and Scott Bassill (11 digs) led the Highlanders defensively.

With two more wins on Saturday, Cairn won five of their final six matches, and four straight, to close out the 2018-19 season in excellent fashion.
