LANGHORNE, PA- The Highlanders bats fell quiet Saturday against Centenary College, and they dropped both contests to the visiting Cyclones of Centenary College.
Â
Game one started slowly as neither team tallied a run over the first 2 innings. The Cyclones got on the board with two runs in the third, setting the table for Jessica Hewitt's stellar pitching performance. Cairn battled back, with both
Haley Tinney and
Tori Knox notching a hit and a walk, in addition to another walk from
Katelynn Reiss. Despite the baserunners, Cairn simply couldn't find the breakthrough hit and fell after Centenary notched a couple insurance runs in the later innings.
Â
Oddly enough, the Highlanders and Cyclones each notched a number of key hits in game two, but neither team could pick up a run.
Meagan Maratita dominated on the mound for the Highlanders, pitching a complete game and breezing through the Cyclones lineup time and again. Unfortunately, Centenary's Roxana Gonzalez was at the top of her game as well and the game headed to extra innings tied 0-0. The Cyclones picked up a huge run in the top of the 8th on a double from pinch hitter Madison Ketch. Down but not out, the Highlanders loaded the bases in the bottom half.
Meagan Maratita started the two out rally with a sharp single to center field,
Tori Knox followed with a drive over second base, and
Olivia Nieto walked to load the bases. After a long battle,
Krista Earl swung just underneath a pitch, popping up and ending the Highlanders comeback chances.
Â
The Highlanders will take on Clarks Summit University in a CSAC doubleheader Tuesday afternoon beginning at 3:00 PM.
