Cairn Loses Heart-Breaker in Extra Innings

Fort Pierce, FL – The Cairn Highlanders continued their 9 game varsity florida spring break trip with and afternoon matchup with Geneva College.  The Golden Tornadoes would get the better of the Highlanders in a come from behind 6-5 win in extra innings.

The Highlanders wasted no time jumping out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning.  Nate Wilson led the game off with a single to the shortstop, before being forced out on a Brian Amantia fielder's choice.  Daniel Morales then singled through the right side to put two runners on base for Cairn.  Caleb Edman then stepped to the plate and hit his fourth triple of the year, which easily scored Morales and Amantia to give Cairn the lead.

Starting pitcher Albert Taylor was in a groove, as the senior was cruising through the first three innings.  However in the fourth, Geneva would take advantage of a Cairn error to plate their first run of the game and cut the lead in half.

In the 5th Cairn would tack on 2 more runs when senior Brett Marks and freshman Mike Sorowice both would double to deep left center field.  Marks knocked in Morales, while Sorowice would then score Marks.

In the 6th the Highlanders would another insurance run when Emilio Alvarez singled to lead off the inning.  Josh Melchior would hit a single of his own to put two runners on with no outs in the inning.  Brian Amantia would hit a ball past the diving first baseman for a double, easily scoring Alvarez and giving the Highlanders a 5-1 lead.
Taylor, who had a wonderful outing, got into trouble in the home half of the 6th.  After two extra base hits from Geneva, the senior would exit the game.  Taylor scattered 7 hits through 5.2 innings, giving up 3 runs, 2 earned, with striking out 5 and picking 2 runners off of first.  Taylor gave way to Nat Ross who threw 1.1 innings of hitless baseball.  Carson Conradt would then come on to pitch the 8th inning.  The sophomore righty, threw a total of 5 pitches, all for strikes, to retire the side and the Highlanders would take a 2 run lead to the 9th.

Daniel Morales was called on to close out the game for Cairn in the 9th.  Morales would easily get the first out, with a foul out to first baseman Daniel Bierc.  Morales would strike out the next batter, but he would reach first on the dropped third strike.  The Golden Tornadoes next batter was called out on strikes.  There were 2 outs and that is when things took a turn for the worse.  With 2 strikes on the batter a miscommunication in the infield would allow Geneva to score the tying runs.

With the game going to extra innings, the Highlanders would be retired in order in the 10th.  Again the Highlanders would be 1 out away from extending the game further into extra innings.  After two singles, Geneva had runners on 1st and 3rd, it was the pinch runner that came on in the 9th inning that would deliver the single past the out stretched of arm of a diving Amantia.  Geneva would score the winning run which completed the comeback.

Cairn will look to get back in the win column as they continue their Florida trip with an afternoon game against the University of Northwestern (MN).
