FLEMINGTON, NJ- On an unseasonably sunny afternoon at the picturesque Diamond Nation baseball complex, the Highlanders swept Gordon College, carding their first two wins of the 2019 season.
Â
The Highlanders started the season in stellar fashion as senior
Sam Dralle looked to be in midseason form. The Cairn ace mowed through the Gordon lineup, using his top-of-the-line fastball to keep the Fighting Scots hitters off-balance. Gordon struck first, scoring an unearned run off a bloop hit down the right field line and taking a 1-0 lead. Jolted awake by the deficit, the Highlanders duo of freshman outfielders announced their arrival in outstanding fashion. Right fielder
Caleb Edman smashed a triple to deep right field, followed up quickly by a towering RBI double from center fielder
Michael Sorowice. Dan Bierc notched his first RBI of the season to put the Highlanders ahead and Cairn never looked back. In true Cairn fashion, the Highlanders manufactured two insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth with five stolen bases in the inning. Staked to a 4-1 lead, Dralle handed off his two hit performance to sophomore
Nat Ross, who looked impressive sitting down 6 straight batters to card his first save of the season.

The second game saw Cairn's stalwart shortstop Nate Wilson flex his myriad of talents early in the season. Wilson walked twice and swiped three bags through the first three innings, notching two runs and throwing Gordon's starter off his game. The Highlanders broke it open in the bottom of the fourth, starting a two out rally with a Nano Fernandez walk, single from freshman Josh Melchoir, and 2 RBI base knock from Wilson. Power-hitting second basemen Brian Amantia, Jr. fired a double to right and first basemen
Daniel Morales walked, setting up catcher
Brett Marks' towering three run bomb down the left field line.
Carson Conradt exited in line for an easy win after his 5 innings of one run ball. The Fighting Scots put up a fight in the final inning, but senior
Albert Taylor struck out the last batter with ease to mark his first save of the season.

The Highlanders will have a week off, before hosting Norwich University March 2 at 12:00 PM.
