LANGHORNE, PA- The Highlanders hosted CSAC opponent Keystone College Thursday night- Cairn took the Giants down to the wire but fell just short, dropping the contest by a final score of 53-48.
Payton Emerick and
Kendra Stum led the Highlanders with two free throws and a jumper each in the first quarter, while
Charlotte Allen also knocked down a midrange jumper. A three pointer from
Dakota Hitchner briefly gave the Highlanders the lead, but Keystone responded with three straight shots from distance to take control of the second quarter. The Highlanders trailed by 14 before Stum finished another layup and Hitchner splashed her second three as time expired to give Cairn momentum heading into the second half.
The Highlanders buckled down on defense in the second half, holding Keystone to just 6-26 shooting from the field and 1-9 from beyond the arc.
Melissa Good caught fire at the start of the fourth quarter, knocking down two jumpers to bring the Highlanders within a point. Two free throws from Emerick put Cairn ahead 44-43 with 4 minutes remaining, however a Keystone layup and clutch free throw shooting allowed the Giants to pull ahead and sneak away with a 53-48 victory.
Hitchner (12 points, 10 rebounds) and Stum (10 points, 11 rebounds) both tallied double-doubles and Emerick came just two rebounds shy with 10 points and 8 rebounds. The Highlanders will host Bryn Athyn College at 1:00 PM Saturday afternoon in search of another CSAC victory.
