Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Highlanders Win 5th Straight on Homecoming

LANGHORNE, PA- Fresh off a thrilling overtime victory from women's soccer, the homecoming festivities were reaching the finale, as the Cairn University men's soccer team went to battle against longtime CSAC rival Clarks Summit University.

After the Highlanders garnered a playoff berth against Clarks Summit with Brendan Keller's buzzer-beating goal last season, anticipation was high for this afternoon's rematch.  Neither team wasted time, as center back Ty Smith got on the end of a corner from Brett Kikendall, firing over the crossbar with the first chance of the match. However, Clarks Summit would net the afternoon's first goal, when Trevor Hubbard slotted into an empty net when freshman keeper Kam Clarke came out and slightly misjudged a through ball from the Defenders Sam Dodd.  Despite the early deficit, the Highlanders never panicked, responding in the 13th minute, when the Defenders were called for a handball inside the box.  Junior Brett Kikendall stepped up to the penalty kick, coolly burying his attempt in the right side netting to even the game.  The Highlanders kept up their relentless attack, taking back the lead in the 34th minute when Joey Weaver played an absolutely beautiful through ball over the top of the defense and into the path of a streaking Brendan Keller. Like he's done so many times before, Keller artfully curved his shot around a charging Defenders' keeper and into the back of the net.  Keller and speedy substitute Tim Smith would each have excellent chances over the next twelve minutes, but their shots rifled just over the crossbar to keep the score at 2-1 at the conclusion of the first half.

The Highlanders opened the second half in excellent fashion when sophomore Brandon Hasko earned another penalty kick in the 52nd minute.  Hasko conceded the PK attempt to Joey Weaver who crossed up the Clarks Summit keeper and extended the Highlander lead to three goals to one.  With the lead firmly in hand, Cairn continued their excellent form, as freshman Josh Goodyear put the icing on the cake with his first goal of the season in the 77th minute.  In an incredibly physical match, the Highlanders clearly illustrated why they sit atop the CSAC standings, controlling the entire match and putting an excellent finishing touch on an outstanding day at Cairn University's 2018 Homecoming.

With the victory, the Highlanders extended their winning streak to 5 games, improving to 6-3-1 overall, and more importantly 2-0 in conference play.  Joey Weaver was stupendous in the victory, tallying a goal and two assists to lead the Highlanders offense.  With the victory the Highlanders grabbed two wins on Homecoming Day to send fans and alumni home happy. Thanks to everyone who came out to support the Highlanders!
