Highlanders Split Staten Island Tri-Match

STATEN ISLAND, NY- With no rest for the weary, the Highlanders hit the road for a tri-match at the College of Staten Island to continue their opening weekend.

The Highlanders squared off against the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) Bears in their first match of the afternoon. Similar to their season opening match, the Highlanders found themselves in a tightly-contested clash once more. Fortunately, the Highlanders fortunes were reversed from a night ago. Outstanding outsides Haley Sheehan and Lyntia Gwess tallied 27 combined kills to only 4 errors to lead the attack, while Brie Norton and Micaiah Randolph each notched 15 digs to fuel the Highlander defense. Setter Liz White dished out a season high 33 assists, and freshman middle Allison Barnes added another 6 kills and a solo block. Despite three close sets, the Highlanders swept the first match 25-23, 25-22, 25-18.

Riding high after their first win of the season, the Highlanders scuffled a bit against the host in their second match of the day. Struggling to get into a groove, the Highlanders dropped the first two sets, before taking a third set thriller, 26-24. Trailing 23-21, Cairn rattled off 5 of the next 6 points to win the set 26-24, thanks in large part, to 2 kills from Haley Sheehan and an ace from setter Liz White. The Highlanders did drop the final set- but should exit the weekend with nothing but confidence.

After a grueling opening weekend, the Highlanders will look forward to two more home matches next week, beginning Tuesday night when they host King's College at 6:00 PM.
