HACKETTSTOWN, NJ- The Highlanders showed a flair for the dramatic, mounting two late rallies to defeat Centenary University and edge above .500 on the season once more.
Â
Game one stood as a stalemate over the first five innings until an RBI single put the Cyclones ahead 2-1 with time rapidly escaping. Never giving up,
Katelynn Reiss lead off the 7
th with a double, quickly followed by a Krista Earl single. After the Cyclones reorganized their defense, Jenna Alshay rapped a single up the middle to score Reiss and tie the game at 2 apiece. Reiss stayed hot in the 8
th, blasting a single through the infield to score Shay Walker and give Cairn a 3-2 victory in game one.
Â
Game two followed a similar pattern as Meagan Maratita gave the Highlanders an early lead, but Centenary drew level in the fifth once more. The second game headed to extra innings as well, and no stranger to high-pressure situations Krista Earl doubled to left to score Reiss once more for the Highlanders game-winning run.
Â
Krista Earl pitched 16 innings on the afternoon, giving up only 3 earned runs and striking out 9, while also going 4-8 at the plate to lead the Highlanders.
Katelynn Reiss also finished with 3 timely hits, with two coming in extra innings.
Â
With rain on the horizon, the Highlanders matchup with Cedar Crest College will almost certainly be postponed tomorrow and the Highlanders next contest coming Saturday vs. Gwynedd Mercy University.
