BELLEROSE, NY- On a beautiful Sunday afternoon the Highlanders traveled to New York to take on the York College Cardinals in a non-conference doubleheader.
Â
The Highlanders cruised through game one, using a huge first and second inning, as well as another dominant pitching performance from Krista Earl, to defeat the Cardinals 9-0. The Highlanders capitalized on a couple defensive errors and wild pitches to load the bases in the first. Meagan Maratita singled in a run before
Katelynn Reiss doubled to deep center, scoring two more. After another RBI single from Jenna Alshay, the Highlanders lead 5-0 at the end of the first inning. The next inning followed a similar pattern as Sony MacBain and Shay Walker reached base, before Maratita singled and Reiss doubled back-to-back to score another three runs for the Highlanders. With Earl on her best form, the Highlanders completed their victory with ease. Earl allowed only 3 hits and tallied 9 strikeouts, while Sony MacBain and Meagan Maratita went 3-4, and
Katelynn Reiss went 2-4 with 4 RBI.
Â
ÂÂÂÂÂÂGame two began a bit slowerÂÂ as Haley Tinney manufactured a run with expert baserunning, but the Cardinals quickly answered in the bottom half to tie the game. With Shay Walker on the mound, Krista Earl contributed with her bat instead of her arm, belting a two run homerun to open the floodgates for the Highlanders offense that did not stop until the final score was 11-2. Reiss went 2-3, McKenna Schindele went a perfect 2-2, and Earl went 3-3 to lead the Highlanders offense.
Â
The Highlanders travel to Centenary University to play a doubleheader beginning at 3:00 PM Wednesday afternoon.
