MADISON, NJ- The Highlanders hit the road for the first time this season, traveling to Fairleigh Dickinson University to take on the Devils. In a back and forth contest, the Highlanders outlasted FDU for a commanding 9-4 victory.
Â
The Highlanders kept their bats hot, jumping on FDU from the start when
Alejandro Fernandez singled with the bases loaded, knocking in two runs and staking the Highlanders to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first.
Daniel Morales knocked in another run, and
Emilio Alvarez shut down the Devils to keep the Highlanders on top. Cairn put the pressure on FDU again the second as right fielder
Andrew Philips doubled to right center, Jake Allen singled him in, and
Emilio Alvarez helped his own cause with a single to plate Allen and put the Highlanders on top 5-0. After an error allowed Fairleigh Dickinson to get on the board with two runs in the 2
nd, the Devils brought the game nearly all the way back in the fourth with another two runs. Fortunately, Alvarez stayed hot at the dish and
Sam Dralle came in to shut down the Devils over the rest of the contest. Alvarez, Morales, and Fernandez combined for four more RBIs in the 5
th and 6
th inning to put the game squarely in the Highlanders hands.
Â
Sam Dralle picked up his first win of the season, giving up only 2 hits in 3.2 innings and notching five strikeouts. Nate Wilson (2-3),
Emilio Alvarez (3-4, 3 RBIs), and
Alejandro Fernandez (2-4, 3 RBIs) were absolutely huge in the middle of Cairn's batting order, carrying the offense and leading the Highlanders to a win.
Â
The Highlanders head to Florida to play 7 games over the next week, beginning Saturday at 2:00 PM against Kenyon College.
